Dr. Miguel Soriano-Amat, CSIC Madrid, Spain will give us a seminar titled  "Your Fiber is Listening: High-Performance DAS and the Future of Distributed Sensing"

Abstract: What if a single optical fiber could detect an earthquake, spot an intruder, or monitor a pipeline — all at once, over tens of kilometers? This seminar explores the fascinating world of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), where ordinary telecom fiber becomes a dense array of high-performance sensors. We introduce two powerful alternatives to conventional DAS: Chirped Pulse φOTDR (CP-φOTDR), which exploits frequency-swept pulses for superior sensitivity, and Time-Expansion φOTDR (TE-φOTDR), which achieves remarkable spatial resolution and SNR by using dual-frequency comb concepts. Throughout the talk, real-world deployments bring these ideas to life: from seismic monitoring and geophysical sensing to perimeter security and infrastructure surveillance.

Miguel Soriano-Amat is currently a “Juan de la Cierva” fellow at Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain, where he is part of the Nonlinear and Nanoscale Guided Optics (N2GO). He received the bachelor’s degree in physics and the master’s degrees in advanced physics from the Universitat de València, Valencia, Spain, in 2017 and 2018, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electronicsfrom the Universidad de Alcalá, Alcalá de Henares, Spain, in 2023.
